What is a Creative Project?
Music is organized sound in time. A Creative Project is music expressed in notation, lead sheets, or graphic notation reflecting your musical ideas. Every person has their individual process; the Creative Faculty is here to learn your creative preferences and coach you during four half-hour private tutorials during the course of the Institute. Whether your project is a song or an instrumental piece for acoustic instruments or a mash-up of audio clips from other sources, our Creative Faculty has years of teaching experience, technical expertise and will provide resources and guidance as you work throughout the week. Every participant is encouraged to create a minimum of one minute of music every day during the Institute. Beyond four coaching sessions, additional tutorials are available for $30/half-hour.
How will you participate? An institute focuses your attention in a short, intensive span of time to realize musical ideas. > Generate rich and exciting musical ideas > Capture those ideas in notation or a recording > Enhance & improve your musical ideas > Share your music with an audience and your peers > Discover new skills and musical literacies
COVID-19: COI is an online environment very much like other virtual learning platforms. We have worked hard to re-invent our residential JCI program to maintain an authentic experience online. In Summer 2021, COI will be a synchronous experience with Junior Composers Institute. Group sessions, private coaching sessions, score readings and performances will occur simultaneously online and in-person. Nightly Lounges will be convened at the end-of-day online for all JCI and COI composers and are an opportunity for social time, conversation, collaboration and sharing.

We want to thank, especially, the ASCAP Foundation & the BMI Foundation for scholarships to support talented musicians participating in all Junior Composers Summer Programs including the Composers Online Institute. Their support is focussed on composers who might otherwise face barriers to participation based on race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical/medical/mental ability, religious identity, familial status, economic status, musical training or genre.
We are equally grateful for the support of the music clubs of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin that form the North Central Region of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Finally, we owe our sustained vitality to the many families, alumni, volunteers and music teachers whose generosity inspire and support young music-makers in their pursuit of musical expression.
